Scouting For Chicks

aka

Scout

Scout was born in April of 2001 on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where he was raised like a wild mustang never handled in any way.  His breeding is unknown but we suspect he has spanish mustang and just a hint of draft ( however I have had comments from a connermara breeder that he looked half, and I have been asked if he was half andalusian.).  Rob's mom picked him out of the herd as a yearling and brought him home and put him out in a back pasture with other gelding still never being touched until he was 3 years old, which is where I come in.  In June of 2004 Rob and I went to South Dakota to visit Rob's mom and break a couple 3 year olds.  Well when I was introduced to Scout I fell in love.  We managed to get him tamed enough to get him in the trailer so he could get gelded, then we trim his hooves a couple days later and got 3 rides on him 2 in the round pen, one in out in the pasture.  After seeing the progress he made in just 1 1/2 weeks I knew I had to have him.  Rob's mom was thinking of selling him because she though he was going to be a bit much to handle so I bought him and made arrangements to have him shipped back here to California.  He has made leaps and bounds in his training and we will start showing huntseat this spring.  He is starting to prove to be an outstanding jumping talent.  Although he just turned 4 and I am not jumping him as part of his training yet, this last summer he jumped a corral fence when in custody of the horse transporter, then in the fall he jumped a 4 1/2 wall out of the covered arena (only another 4 1/2 foot windows to a rafter), then just this January he jumped his stall door so he could munch on hay in the barn and he did it with a blanket and rain sheet on.  We can't wait till he turns 5 and we can start his hunter career.

Update:  We recently talked to Rob's mom about where she got him, apparently he person who bred him had herds of TB's quarters and spanish mustangs, so Scout is most likely a product of all of those.  We are hoping to visit the herd this summer when we visit her to see some of the other stock.

Update:  We went to our first show and did wonderful.  Scout and I got two 2nd places, a 3rd place and a 6th place in walk trot classes.  The class we got 6th in was a large open class with all of the experienced horse in there just to warm up, but we placed so I am very proud!!  I added pictures below..

Update:  We took Scout camping again, and now Scout is gun trained, I shot a .22 Caliber pistol off him several times, he didn't really care. Here is some video (10mb)  Here is some video of him going "nite nite" (10mb)
